Did you know that Industek recently took part in a major project in British Columbia?
Quebec-based Industek has installed several compaction systems at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH), the largest hospital in Western Canada and one of the largest in the country in terms of capacity. VGH treats nearly 295,000 patients annually, making it a major player in the Canadian healthcare system.
Real environmental challenges
Waste management in healthcare facilities is a significant challenge. Increasingly, healthcare facilities are adopting eco-friendly practices to reduce their environmental footprint. This trend places hospitals at the heart of sustainable development efforts. Industek’s expertise has, therefore, proven essential in the realization of this ambitious project.

A complex, multifaceted project
This mandate illustrates the many challenges associated with waste management in a hospital setting, including:
- Particular technical requirements
- Complex space and traffic constraints
- Absolute rigour when working in a sensitive environment
From custom design to on-site installation, including transportation logistics, every stage of the project required the expertise and commitment of Industek’s teams.
Located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, the VGH presents considerable accessibility challenges. The delivery of the equipment—transported on two 53-foot trucks that crossed the country from Victoriaville—required careful planning. The narrowness of the site, combined with the urban density, demanded flawless execution.

Another major challenge was the context of major renovations involving numerous stakeholders, including contractors, architects, and engineers. All communications, technical adjustments, and validations were conducted remotely, necessitating rigorous coordination and a high degree of flexibility.

Installation and training: a turnkey approach
Three members of the Industek team travelled to the site to install the compactors. A full-day training session was then provided to VGH maintenance employees, covering equipment use, maintenance, and safe operating procedures.
Nationally recognized expertise
This large-scale project reinforces Industek’s expertise in delivering compaction solutions adapted to the most complex environments. It demonstrates the company’s ability to collaborate with leading institutions. It confirms its role as a Canadian leader in sustainable waste management.
